Marina di Campo is a seaside tourist resort on the south coast of the island of Elba. One of the most famous and most visited places on the island. Marina di Campo was one of the first towns on Elba to develop a tourist vocation thanks to the picturesque old town with its Medici watchtower, the pretty little port, the splendid golden sand beach and the pine forest that surrounds the village.
The center of the village of Marina di Campo has developed around the small port where, over the years, boutiques and shops of various kinds have sprung up in the main streets of Via Roma and Via Marconi, open every evening until late summer. In addition, the promenade is animated by stalls and cultural events of various kinds.
Once upon a time, the precious granite quarried in the nearby quarries of San Piero and Vallebuia was exported from the port of Marina di Campo, which the ancient Romans were already quarrying and exporting to their empire to build important monuments that still stand today are visible, like the Pantheon in Rome. Today excursions to the island of Pianosa and boat trips along the south coast of Elba start from the port of Marina di Campo.
Over the years the village has expanded onto the plain that rises behind its gulf. Thanks to the flat area, it is easy to travel by foot or by bike. A bike path has been specially created to move safely from one side of the bay to the other. In addition, the characteristic historic center and the small port are closed to traffic and pleasant to visit at any time of the day.
Thanks to the central location, some of the most beautiful beaches (Cavoli, Fetovaia, Seccheto) or the coasts of the north side can be easily reached in a few minutes by car. Marina di Campo lies at the foot of the Monte Capanne and Monte Perone, which invite hikers to follow the well-signposted paths cloaked in the scent of the Mediterranean maquis and to explore the small hilltop villages such as San Piero and Sant’Ilario.
The airport is located a few kilometers from the village in La Pila.
The beach of Marina di Campo is the largest beach on Elba, with a length of more than 1800 meters. The beach slopes gently into the sea and also has some shallows, which is why it is particularly preferred and chosen by families with children.
Marina di Campo beach overlooks the gulf in the center of the southern side of the island of Elba, with the island of Montecristo on the horizon. It is fairly sheltered and is only affected by the southerly winds.
The beach is divided into sections with free beach and sections with equipped beach and offers various options for sports enthusiasts: three diving centers, sailing schools, windsurf rental and schools, boat and pedal boat rental, guided kayak excursions. Bars and restaurants offer their service so that you don’t have to leave the beach. A beautiful pine forest of pine trees surrounds half of the beach, whose sand is made of fine granite.
Two bays border Marina di Campo: Galenzana (sand) and Capo Fonza (gravel mixed with sand). Both can be reached both by sea (also by pedalo or canoe) and on foot, taking a pleasant walk along well-signposted paths that will lead you to these more secluded beaches, crossing the Mediterranean maquis in evocative panoramas of the Bay of Marina di Campo.
